The barrel behind an enduring design
The MP40 was developed in Germany as a practical 9x19mm submachine gun for the Second World War. Its predecessor, the MP38, introduced a stamped-steel construction that reduced machining and production time. The MP40 refined that approach with simplified manufacturing details, making the design better suited to large-scale wartime production.
Although the weapon is often called the "Schmeisser," that name is historically inaccurate. The MP38 and MP40 were associated with Erma Werke and designed by a team led by Heinrich Vollmer; Hugo Schmeisser was associated with other German small-arms designs. The MP40's folding stock, compact profile, and controlled 9x19mm cartridge made it especially recognizable among the era's military firearms.
